Spain Investigates Fatal High-Speed Train Collision as Death Toll Rises

(MENAFN) The number of people killed in a collision involving two high-speed trains in central Spain climbed to at least 68 on Wednesday, prompting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to pledge a comprehensive investigation into the disaster.

Speaking at the accident site in Urda, Toledo, Sanchez said investigators would establish what caused the crash and ensure accountability if any misconduct was discovered, according to reports.

"We will get to the bottom of this. If there has been negligence, it will be known," he said.

Sanchez also declared three days of national mourning from Oct. 29 to 31, describing it as "unacceptable for a country like Spain" to suffer two high-speed rail accidents within the same year.

He pointed to another railway disaster that occurred in Adamuz, Cordoba, in January.

Although preliminary findings indicated that the two crashes may have resulted from different causes, Sanchez stressed that independent investigators and judicial authorities must determine the circumstances surrounding each incident.

The prime minister pledged to introduce firm measures to rebuild public trust in the country's railway network if the investigation uncovered shortcomings in safety procedures.
