NATO Set to Kick Off Baltic Sea Drills with 6,000 Troops

(MENAFN) NATO and US-led naval exercises are set to kick off this week in the Baltic Sea, a broadcaster reported Wednesday — with a significantly leaner force than last year's drills, though officials insist the maneuvers send an unambiguous signal of alliance resolve.

"In this period, it is a sign of the alliance's strength, that a major exercise is being conducted, under US leadership, with broad NATO participation," German Rear Admiral Stephan Haisch said.

The BALTOPS exercise, running from June 4 to June 20, will bring together approximately 20 vessels from 15 countries and around 6,000 personnel — roughly half the scale of last year's iteration.

Officials attributed the reduced footprint to competing operational demands elsewhere, including active deployments in the Middle East and the Arctic. Despite the smaller force, the exercise is still expected to be the largest naval maneuver conducted in the Baltic Sea this year.

Operations will open in the western Baltic before pivoting eastward toward the waters surrounding the Swedish island of Gotland — a strategically vital location in the region.

Rear Admiral Haisch underscored that protecting sea lines of communication remains a core objective of the drills, encompassing both military logistics and the flow of commercial shipping.

On the question of Russian escalation, Haisch said he does not anticipate Moscow taking actions that would trigger NATO's collective defense clause — commonly known as Article 5 — despite the continued tensions gripping the region.
