Doubts Surround Germans Over Merz’s Government
Since assuming office in May, Merz’s coalition — a partnership between his Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD) — has experienced a continuous drop in approval ratings.
In a Sunday report, the media outlet referenced results from a survey carried out by polling firm INSA, revealing that 66% of participants hold a negative perception of the current government’s performance.
The survey also showed that the opposition right-wing party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), is presently the most favored political force in the country, securing the backing of 26% of respondents.
The governing CDU/CSU trails by approximately two percentage points, while the SPD ranks third with 15%.
At the end of September, another INSA poll indicated that Merz’s personal approval had reached its lowest level yet, with nearly two-thirds of Germans expressing dissatisfaction with his leadership.
Meanwhile, the AfD has notably strengthened its position in North Rhine-Westphalia’s regional elections earlier in the month, obtaining 14.5% of the vote in what has traditionally been a stronghold of the ruling coalition — and Merz’s home region.
Merz’s party came to power following the February snap elections, which were triggered after the prior traffic-light coalition, led by Olaf Scholz, collapsed in November 2024 amid a severe budgetary crisis.
