Four people get murdered in Cameroon amid clashes with security forces

(MENAFN) At least four people were killed in Douala, Cameroon, as opposition supporters clashed with security forces ahead of the official announcement of the presidential election results, according to regional authorities.

The unrest erupted after partial results from the October 12 vote were reported by local media. Reports indicate that 92-year-old President Paul Biya is leading with 53.66% of the vote, followed by opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary with 35.1%. Cabral Libii and Bello Bouba Maigari trailed with 3.41% and 2.45%, respectively.

Supporters of Tchiroma took to the streets of Douala, Cameroon’s commercial capital, on Sunday, blocking roads, burning tires, and confronting police ahead of the formal results, which are expected on Monday.

Regional governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua said demonstrators attacked police stations in two districts and confirmed that “four people unfortunately lost their lives.” He added that several members of the security forces were also injured during the clashes.

The country’s constitutional council is set to validate the election outcome, which is widely expected to extend Biya’s nearly 50-year rule. The vote has been contentious, as Biya seeks an eighth term after 43 years in power, making him one of the world’s oldest leaders and Africa’s second longest-serving head of state after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang Nguema. Biya has been only the second president of Cameroon since its independence from France in 1960.

Biya’s main challenger, Tchiroma—a former transport and communications minister and leader of the Front for the National Salvation of Cameroon (FSNC) party—resigned from government in June 2025 to contest the presidency.
