Polish authorities arrest two Ukrainian citizens for claimed espionage

(MENAFN) Polish authorities have arrested two Ukrainian citizens on suspicion of espionage for a foreign intelligence agency, according to the country’s Internal Security Agency (ABW).

The arrests occurred on October 14 in Katowice, a southern Polish city. The two men, aged 32 and 34, were formally charged the same day. The ABW did not disclose their identities, citing national security concerns.

Investigators allege that the suspects gathered intelligence on Poland’s military and critical infrastructure, including sites and transport routes used to deliver Western weapons to Ukraine. The agency also reported uncovering evidence of payments linked to their surveillance activities and “other criminal activities.”

Polish authorities stated that the men were likely recruited between May 2023 and August 2025.

While Poland has been a strong supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, bilateral relations have been strained by various disputes. Several Eastern European countries, including Poland, temporarily banned Ukrainian grain imports after a European Commission decision led to falling local prices and widespread farmer protests.

Polish officials have also criticized Ukraine’s celebration of nationalist figures implicated in massacres of Polish citizens during World War II. Polish President Karol Nawrocki has suggested criminalizing public support for the ideology of Stepan Bandera, a Nazi collaborator regarded as a national hero in Ukraine.
