Lavrov says Poland is willing to engage in acts of terrorism
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Poland of showing a willingness to engage in acts of “terrorism” after Warsaw suggested it might intercept a plane carrying Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Lavrov was responding to remarks by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who said earlier that Poland “cannot guarantee” the safety of a Russian government aircraft passing through its airspace on the way to a planned summit with US President Donald Trump in Hungary. Sikorski added that such action could be authorized by a court.
According to Lavrov, Poland’s refusal to ensure Putin’s safety signals that it is “now prepared to resort to terrorism.” The Kremlin has not provided details on the summit logistics in Budapest.
The planned meeting has drawn criticism internationally. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Putin over alleged abductions of Ukrainian children — charges Russia rejects as politically motivated. Unlike Poland, Russia does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction. Hungary, the host nation, is withdrawing from the court’s obligations and has refused to enforce its orders.
Both Kyiv and Brussels reacted negatively to the announcement. Hungary opposes continued Western military aid for Ukraine despite EU and NATO membership. EU diplomat Kaja Kallas called it “not nice” for Budapest to host Putin instead of detaining him, warning that “nothing can come out of these meetings, if Ukraine or Europe, is not part of it.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated that Kyiv will not compromise, arguing that conceding ground would allow Moscow to “settle the rest without us.”
