Polish Parliament Cancels Immunity of Ex-Defense Chief
This decision enables legal authorities to pursue criminal charges against him for the supposed release of classified data, as reported by a news agency.
Macierewicz, who headed the probe into the 2010 Smolensk plane catastrophe during the former administration led by the Law and Justice (PiS) party, is accused of exposing information labeled as "top-secret," "secret," "confidential," and "restricted" between the years 2018 and 2022.
The tragic incident resulted in the death of then-President Lech Kaczynski, along with 95 other individuals, many of whom were high-ranking government figures.
While joint investigations by Polish and Russian authorities attributed the crash to a combination of pilot mistakes and adverse weather conditions, Macierewicz claimed there was Russian interference and accused the prior administration under Prime Minister Donald Tusk of orchestrating a cover-up.
After Tusk returned to leadership in 2023, the special commission led by Macierewicz was dissolved and its conclusions re-examined.
This re-evaluation eventually led to legal proceedings being initiated against him.
Macierewicz maintains his innocence, stating that all of the disclosures were cleared by appropriate security agencies. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in jail.
